Blog Hosting

So, you blog… and your blog is hosted on either Blogger or Wordpress.com. You write well (or you think you write well) but still you think something’s wrong with your blog site. What could it be? It’s right at the tip of your tounge. No, it’s not your cigarette. Riggght, the URL of your blog is not quite cool or catchy.

A blog URL like “blogadikz.blogspot.com” or “blogadikz.wordpress.com” just won’t cut it. It looks like you owe it to Blogger or Wordpress.com that you are blogging. You can have your own “www.blogadikz.com” URL if you put your mind (and your wallet) to it.

Here’s how to do it:

Find a web hosting company…

  1. that provides automatic Wordpress software installation (and upgrades!)
  2. that allows unlimited domain names with only 1 account
  3. that provides at least one free domain name
  4. that has cheaper fees
  5. that has a 24/7 chat support
  6. that offers free domain information privacy

Let me try to explain the advantages of some points above.

Automatic Wordpress software installation. If you’re not a techie (or a lazy one), you will want somebody to do the installation for you. Need I mention the hassle of upgrading your software?

Unlimited domain names. You will want to blog about completely different topics. You can separate blog topics by having as many domain name as you want. Each additional domain will cost you about $9 a year, of course. That’s cheap enough though.

24/7 Chat Support. Not all web hosting companies have this service. We all have our stupid questions and we are, of course, lazy to look up the answers at the help section.

Domain Information Privacy. Sometimes you just don’t want anybody to know that you own a domain name. How else can you blog about your wild beach party if your geek dad tries a “whois” on your domain name?

When I first started blogging, I had to find out a web hosting company that supports all of the points mentioned above. Moreover, a hosting company strongly recommended by Wordpress (the blogging software) would boost your trust in the company’s server and service stability. I found one in Host Monster.

Of course, I could be an idiot and tomorrow Host Monster’s servers may crash and delete all my blog posts.

    Some quick questions for you:
    1. How much did it cost you in terms of web-hosting fees annually?
    2. If your web-hosting plan says you have a choice for multiple domains, does it mean I can have a second and possibly a third blog at no additional cost?
    3. In your experience, and your friends who blog like you, how much is left of your ad earnings after deducting the costs of self-hosting. Just a ballpark figure, if you will. Will I have some left for internet subscription and electricity bill? :)
    4. What web hosting company can you recommend for me? Seven months with Host Monster, would say you got a good deal?

You have a comment section in your About page, but it doesn’t work, so I put this questions here.

Thank you very much for your time.

    Hi Jan,

    1. Annually, it costs me about $84 for the hosting and $9 for each domain name. It seems like Host Monster has a promo now, so it might be cheaper now.
    2. You can have multiple blogs at no additional cost. The blog software/application itself is free. You only pay if you decide to buy a new domain ($9 each domain). You see, you have two options when installing blogs. You can use a sub-domain or an entirely new domain. Sub-domains are “children” of your main domain and you don’t pay extra for this.

For example, you have a blog site with a domain named “www.janblog.com”. You can install additional blogs and name them “food.janblog.com”, “travel.janblog.com”, “etc.janblog.com”. This won’t cost you extra.

Or, you can install additional blogs and assign them entirely new domain names like “www.foodblog.com”, “www.traveler.com”, “www.etc.com”. This will cost you $9 per domain name but the blog installation is free. Again, you only pay for the new domain names.

    3. I haven’t earned much to be worthy of answering this question. :D
    4. So far, I haven’t had any troubles with Host Monster. I like that it’s cheap and it has a chat feature so you can ask for help. Like most hosting companies, it automates the installation of Wordpress. Overall, I recommend Host Monster.

I hope I answered all your questions.
