Farewell, Francis Magalona

francis-magalona

Francis M. passed away yesterday and I could say I was shocked. My wife and I were just wondering several days ago why there have been no updates on his website.  I even suggested that they may have been very busy with therapies and such.

Francis Magalona is one of the domestic musicians I admire from sheer talent alone.  I came to know about him when I was very young.  I think he was an actor first before transforming into a very talented musician.  I really liked his music when I was in high school.  I used to memorize his early rap songs especially Mga Kababayan Ko!

I even dug his music further when he incorporated heavy guitars and catchy bass riffs in his songs.  I was addicted to Ayoko Sa Dilim – “Walang kuryente mula sais bente… hanggang alas dose… kasi kasi… atras abante ang bansa natin. Mabagal ang abante, ang atras ay matulin!

It was a crazy-awesome song.  I often fantasized I was his guitar player. On a side note, I think Noel Mendez was his real guest guitar player.

Another one of my all-time favorite Francis M song is Meron Akong Ano -  “Meron akong ano!  Meron akong kwento! Meron akong ano!  Meron akong kwento! Ah wala wala wala wala wala wala.  Pakinggan ninyo ang sinasabi ng labi…“  I’ve never heard the word wala (nothing) sound so heavy.

And his song Three Stars and the Sun?  “Three stars and the sun!  Three stars and the sun!  I’m ready to defend the three stars and the sun.” It stirs your patriotic senses in an alternative kind of way.  When you hear it, it makes you want to become a soldier.  Or fantasize becoming one.  When I think of Francis M, I think about this song.

Some of his songs that I love are Pikon, Three Stars and a Sun, Bahay Yugyugan, Baw Waw Waw, Nilamon ng Sistema, Ito Ang Gusto Ko, among others.

Francis M is gone but Francism lives on.

For a song about nothing this weighs particularly heavy. You’re right. Bull’s eye. And that’s how I feel about his death. It leaves a hole in your consciousness, or that place where your heart should have been. Though you’re not sure because all you felt is numbness.

Francis, thank you for your music. Gonna miss you, bro.
