PLDT fiber to the home (FTTH)

pldt-logoPLDT is launching “fiber to the home” (FTTH).

Exciting.

Allegedly, FTTH willl deliver high-speed data to homes and buildings.

Fiber optic technology transmits data via light signals sent through thin strands of pure glass.  Imagine that, your data travelling through light, inside a strand of pure glass no less.

The new platform will be able to deliver simultaneous voice, video and data services at much higher speeds and larger capacities than DSL or Cable.  I guess it’s like merging DSL and Cable and giving it steroids.

Initial tests have shown that FTTH is capable of 94.86 mbps. Allegedly at this speed, a 5mb file would only take a second to download, a 35mb video clip 3 seconds and an 800mb movie a minute!

It looks like Cable TV itself is being challenged here, I don’t know.

PLDT chair MVP personally saw FTTH’s performance watching the Pacquiao-Hatton fight via video streaming using such platform.  Obviously, MVP was impressed.

The service will initially be available to upper class households. I guess I’m not eligible for subscription.  Pilot areas for FTTH include Bonifacio, Global City, Forbes Park, Urdaneta Village, Ayala Alabang, Dasmarinas Village, Wack-Wack, Ayala Heights, Valle Verde and certain places covered by PLDT Subictel and PLDT Clarktel.

Davao City, the best city in the world, is left out again.
