French Open

Nadal vs Federer

Rafael Nadal recently defeated Roger Federer for the French Open title. It’s another setback for Federer’s quest for the highest number of grand slams won in tennis. Of course, the record holder is “Pistol Pete” Sampras. I wrote earlier that Pistol Pete is my all-time tennis hero. Read more »

Google’s New Favicon

google-favicon.jpg

I hate it. Sometimes, when I’m googling, I’m having a hard time finding the Google site tab in my browser. Maybe I’ll get used to it, eventually. I like the old favicon because you remember the Google logo when you see it. Whatever.

Michael Jackson’s Bad Guitarist

jenniferbatten.jpgI recently purchased a Michael Jackson concert DVD. I know he’s yesterday’s news but I have always been in awe of his performance since I was a child.

Through the years, my musical inclination changed from folk to hip-hop to heavy metal (and all genres of rock) and back to folk to hip-hop and to any good music, but my admiration of Michael Jackson’s music (or performance) never dwindled. He may be the king of pop but he should be on a genre of his own. You can’t categorize Michael Jackson. He’s like the exception to a rule. Well, in my book at least.

By the way, when the time comes and you appreciate any genre of music, it means you are getting old. I’m still a die-hard Metallica fan but I have “softened up” to appreciate music by Josh Groban(!), Black Eyed Peas, Usher, etc. Read more »

Quick Stomach R.I.P.

So, I went to Manila last monday and the first thing I had in mind after checking in is to go to Quick Stomach. Well, I originally planned on going to Persian Kebab first but my wife pleaded that I delay my Kebab tryst so we could go together later at night. (She had to go somewhere else first.)

I was shocked to see that Quick Stomach was closed. It looked like it was under renovation. I asked the attending lady inside the pharmacy beside it and she said that quickstom (as I fondly call it) was closed for good. Well, that’s not good, it’s bad. Read more »

Tropical Storm Cosme

tropical-storm-cosme.gifI’m supposed to fly to Manila with my wife today but Cosme told us not to go. We just met Cosme and he’s influencing our decisions already? What an arrogant prick.

Metro Manila is on signal no.1 alert - I sure don’t want to go somewhere “trying to signal me not to go”. This reminds me yet again of how I love Davao - the weather, the food, the people. Davao truly is the place to be.

If you’re a frequent traveler here in the Philippines, you may find these links useful for weather forecasts:

I was also hoping those links could forecast the mood of my wife.

Yahoo says Google is a malware

google-malware1.gifApparently, Yahoo’s partnership with Mcafee has some minor glitch. Yahoo Search tags a Google result as malware. Curiously, searching for “google” doesn’t display this warning. Searching for “altavista” does.

Do you think this is an honest mistake, a prank or a joke? Whatever it is, my guess is Google is not laughing.

Update: Yahoo already fixed the glitch concerning Google.  However, one site, whose not as big as Google, is also affected by this anomaly.  The site owner claims they are not spammers as tagged by Yahoo Search.  E-mail correspondence with Yahoo, so far, isn’t doing very well, according to the site owner.  Ouch!

I Know What I Did Last Friday

beer1.jpg

clue: I wasn’t blogging. (Or was I?)

Kobe is MVP! (finally)

I don’t care. I just want him to win titles.
For all the hardwork he’s put through, he deserves all the luck to win it all.

Wi-Fi in the provinces

wifi.gifI’ve been to a number of provinces in the Visayas region last year. Every single time, I needed a Wi-Fi connection because my job required an Internet connection.

I’ll be updating this post as I get to know new Wi-Fi hotspots in the provinces. Please comment if you know of any hotspot in the provinces. I intentionally excluded Davao and Metro Manila because I believe it’s not hard to find hotspots in those cities. Read more »

I Quit Smoking (2 years na!)

cig.jpgTwo years ago today, I finally decided to quit smoking. At my “peak”, I smoked at about 1 pack a day. I smoked the heaviest when I worked as a Web programmer in Manila for about 2 years.

Job-related stress made me smoke heavier. During mancom meetings, I went out and smoked. During departmental meetings, I smoked. When I went to the bathroom, I smoked. Read more »
