I received an e-mail about change in leadership selection today (2010 elections is fast approaching).  Basically, it’s an alternative way of choosing our leaders. This initiative is inspired by Lead India.

Here’s a quote from Scholastic Javier Alpasa, SJ, the one who started this initiative:

I think it is high time that we go beyond the routine of elections and hold a parallel exercise of selecting a leader for the Philippines especially for 2010.

Offhand, the basics of this would need the following:

1) media outfits (top of mind choices: inquirer and abs-cbn)
2) popular personalities with great credibility to make a lead philippines spiel - not an endorsement for a candidate - why this is being done and an inspirational push for people to participate (offhand, a combination of a pacquiao who transcends market categories but primarily targetting the masa to be on board together with a personality that can attract the ab crowd maybe a tony meloto or jaza)
3) telecoms firm to sponsor the sms campaign (any from smart, globe or sun)
4) core group - maybe around 5 to handle the various functions of admin/secretariat, finance, process checkers/documentor s/evaluators

Rough Mechanics:
1) seek nominations for presidentiables via sms. this can go to as much as 20.
2) invite the 20 to public fora, debates
3) have rounds of eliminations all the way to a final 4 then select the champion

if we can generate millions of sms for pinoy big brother or pinoy idol i think we can follow the same packaging /marketing (most important) and the same procedures.

once these are in place, lead philippines can fly!

I think this can be done and I support it. It’s high time we choose the right dealers leaders.
